Wilson
is a three and a half year old English Labrador
Retriever. Aside from being a wonderful
companion to his owner and loyal customer of My
Pet's Vet, Wilson serves a special purpose.
Wilson is a Service Animal recognized by the
Service Animal Registry of America (SARA).
Wilson has been individually trained to perform
a variety of tasks that make life more
manageable for his owner. Wilson's skill
set is unique in that several of his tasks are
geared towards his owners favorite pastime;
hiking. In addition to providing mobility
assistance on uneven terrain, Wilson and his
owner utilize a special harness system that
prevents/mitigates falls. Wilson is also
trained to carry equipment, harvest firewood,
bark for help and provide warmth. In his
free time, he enjoys chewing on sticks and
snoring on the couch.
In
late May, Wilson and his owner will be embarking
on a several month adventure beginning in Alaska
and then traveling to the Southwest. Most
of the time will be spent in National Parks and
Wilderness Areas. Traveling with an animal
presents many issues that are often overlooked
until it is too late. Dr. Beatty, Kate and
Amanda have worked as a team to insure that the
following preparations have been made: Microchip
installation and registration; Area specific
vaccinations and preventative medications;
Certificate of Health to allow Border Crossings;
Animal First Aid classes and a wealth of other
general information. Wilson looks forward
to a lifestyle of riding in a car, going for
walks and eating. Despite his travels,
Wilson will always return to My Pet's Vet for
his health care needs and more! We will
always look forward to seeing Wilson and his
owner when they come home from their travels!
